Darren John Wilkinson (The Sheddy Man) is certified contributor for Gardening Homesteading USA Canada. He has been showcasing his numerous gardening, landscaping, and smallholding projects on his YouTube channel (I'm In The Shed). From Cramlington in the United Kingdom, his garden landscaped, with several outdoor structures, is constantly evolving. No-dig gardening is his method! His videos are presented from his shed located on his small plot, hence his nickname "The Sheddy Man".

In this video, The Sheddy Man sown carrot seeds in 3 types of compost to see wich one will be the best : homemade compost, homemade compost with sand and peat. Everything I do is an experiment to show what works or not. Happy sowing, happy growing!

Carrots sown. 3 types of soil used

Part 1

Carrots sown in 3 types of compost .. the traditional way of 50%sand 50% compost (homemade)… pure homemade compost and old peat compost.. all seived with a 5mm seive.. dark carrots this time ..3 types and this weekend normal orange ones … did half n half compost/sand last year and had my first great success and didn’t get attacked by carrot flies.. plus the fact much easier in the 30 ltr buckets.

Well carrots getting sown in 3 types of soil/compost.reusing old compost pure.. half compost/half sand … old peat compost pure.. lets see what difference it makes if any .. like do I really need to do sand and compost or is peat compost better or just compost ..
All have been sieved with my 5mm seive.. so quite fine .. everything i do is an experiment to show what works or not ..

Part 2

If you saw the first part I was trying 3 types of compost..homemade/homemade-sand.. peat.. sieved with a 5mm sieve.. now germination in 2 none in one zzz was finding peat was constantly drying out unlike other 2 .. so I’d say hard for carrot.. seed to germinate.. I’ve came down today and some popping through.. lol .. go figure.. but still not the way forward.. unless you experiment you never know and you’re scratching your head.. .. think the best one was the 100% homemade.. and I know the sand probably makes it a finer compost for the carrots tap root .. but it’s a easy option for me as got loads of homemade.. plus it’s not over rich .. which can make your carrots fork etc .. they like nutrient deficient compost .. bit like first sowings..

HAPPY SOWING HAPPY GROWING!
